What should I avoid planting near spinach?

To optimize spinach growth, it’s important to avoid planting it near certain crops that may compete for nutrients or attract harmful pests. Here are some plants to avoid planting near spinach:

Potatoes: Potatoes are heavy feeders, especially of nitrogen, which spinach also relies on. Planting them together can result in competition for this key nutrient, stunting spinach growth. Additionally, potatoes may attract pests like aphids, which can easily transfer to nearby spinach and cause damage.

Fennel: Fennel is notorious for inhibiting the growth of many plants due to its allelopathic properties. It secretes chemicals into the soil that can stunt the development of nearby plants, including spinach. Avoid planting fennel near most vegetables for the same reason.

Onions: While onions can deter some pests, they can also compete with spinach for nutrients. Both plants require similar soil conditions, and growing them together may result in slower growth for the spinach, reducing overall yield.

Corn: Corn is a tall, nutrient-hungry crop that can overshadow spinach and compete for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Spinach, being a smaller plant, can be deprived of the essential resources it needs to thrive, especially in terms of light.

Other Large or Heavy-Feeding Plants: Avoid planting spinach near crops that require significant space or nutrients, as they can outcompete spinach and lead to poor growth. Examples include squash, pumpkins, and melons, which spread widely and take up a lot of space.
